Is Menopause Reversible?

Menopause is a phase in a woman’s life that marks the end of her menstrual cycles and her reproductive abilities. However, presently, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the birth rates among women aged 40-44 years continues to rise since the 1980s. So, the question is if it’s possible to reverse it? This article will help you answer that, but before that let’s dig deeper into the basic subjects.

What are Perimenopause, Menopause, and Premature Menopause?

As a girl matures, reaches puberty at the age of 12, and starts menstruating, only 400,000 follicles remain. When she ages fewer follicles remain because with each period the body loses a few hundred eggs. When women complain of menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, weight gain, sleep disruptions, etc., they are actually going through perimenopause which begins in the 30s or 40s. Menopause, unlike how most people perceive it, is just a day and not a continuous phase. The rest is either perimenopause or post-menopause. Women usually reach menopause in their 50s. However, for some females, this process can happen earlier than predicted. Some females even reach menopause in their 40s. Premature Menopause is the one that happens before the natural menopause timing.

Is Menopause Reversible?

When a woman reaches her 40s, the chances of conceiving a baby reduce substantially. These are the years when a female body is preparing for menopause. Although the birth rates in the present day among the age group have increased, they are still lower than in the young early 20s.

To say whether or not you could reverse the natural process, there is less scientific evidence that can assure the reversal. However, a temporary reversal can be possible through treatments like melatonin therapy and ovarian rejuvenation.

According to a Greek study, Sfakianoudis, a gynecologist at the Greek fertility clinic, and his colleagues used a blood treatment to reverse menopause in females. The gynecologist found that Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) helped rejuvenate ovaries. When PRP was injected into the female bodies who have already gone through menopause, their menstrual cycles started all over again, which enabled them to reproduce. This procedure is known as the ovarian rejuvenation process. The ovarian rejuvenation process helps in tissue regeneration, blood flow, and improving inflammation. Apart from that, the process furthermore helps reverse the signs of aging and menopausal symptoms by activating the inactive eggs in the ovaries.

What is Melatonin Therapy for Menopause Reversal?

Melatonin is a sleep hormone produced in the pineal gland, which tends to shrink as a woman age towards menopause. There have been constant efforts from researchers to find a more natural way of reversing menopause and its detrimental symptoms. Through several types of research, it has been found that melatonin drastically affects the reproductive hormones in a female body. Without melatonin, these reproductive hormones tend to decrease.

As per a study by the National Library of Medicine, 3mg of melatonin significantly improved reproductive hormones in females aged 42 to 62years. In addition to that, there was furthermore an improvement in their menopausal symptoms like reduced stress and improvement in mood. Melatonin can also positively impact certain cancers and metabolic health conditions that hamper a healthy life.

Conclusion

Technological advancements and scientific discoveries have led to improvements in healthcare. Menopause is debilitating for females, impacting their health in numerous ways that can hamper their lives. Research suggests that menopause and its symptoms are reversible with advanced techniques like melatonin therapy and ovarian rejuvenation. Although the methods can help females conceive in their 40s as well, the effects are not permanent, and the natural process of menopause is inevitable. Nevertheless, there are various treatments like hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that can help combat and mitigate menopausal symptoms.
